voestalpine's history runs from 1938 in Linz through nationalisation, the invention of the LD process, merger with Alpine Montan, privatisation and today's green-steel transition.

  1. 1938
    Reichswerke Hermann Göring Linz founded under Nazi-era industrial policy to build an integrated steel plant in Linz.
  2. 1945
    After World War II, the Linz works are nationalised and reorganised as VÖEST (Vereinigte Österreichische Eisen- und Stahlwerke).
  3. 1952
    VÖEST patents the LD steelmaking process (basic oxygen steelmaking), one of the most important steel innovations of the 20th century.
  4. 1973
    Merger of VÖEST and Österreichisch-Alpine Montangesellschaft forms VOEST-ALPINE AG.
  5. 1995
    Initial public offering on the Vienna Stock Exchange (ATX) begins the privatisation of the group.
  6. 2001
    VOEST-ALPINE STAHL AG is renamed voestalpine AG and adopts its current four-division structure.
  7. 2007
    Acquisition of BÖHLER-UDDEHOLM AG, a leading global tool steel and special steel producer — anchoring the High Performance Metals division.
  8. 2016
    Opens a direct reduction (HBI) plant in Corpus Christi, Texas — one of the largest of its kind in the world.
